
Burglars gained access via small window.
Sometime between 3am and 6am February 10th, the convenience store at Pier-66 suffered a break-in and theft.
An undisclosed amount of scratch lottery tickets, alcohol and cigarettes was stolen. The amount of the theft is fairly substantial according to store staff.
Thieves broke the small window next to the post office boxes to gain entry.
The RCMP were investigating Sunday morning, with an officer on the scene taking photographs and gathering evidence.
The Cowichan Bay Maritime Center will close it’s doors in January and February, dismiss staff, in a move that will hopefully prevent further difficulties for the financially troubled organization.

Armistice Day
Today is Armistice Day. November 11 2012. They may have changed the name but really, it is Armistice Day.
On this day in 1918 at 1100 hrs, the guns finally fell silent along the Western Front. The First World War, The Great War, The War to End all Wars was done and over. Germany had been defeated. Brave little Belgium had been avenged. By best count, some 16,563,868 people had lost their lives.
In two years, we’ll be able to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of this Great War.

Cowichan Bay Village

Hook up, pump out or weigh anchor.
That’s the opening line in a recent article regarding sewage treatment issues appearing in the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial. It’s a simple sentence, only seven words long. Those seven words however, showcase the entire philosophy, attitude and handling of an issue that’s gone from silent to serious to downright silly in the space of two weeks.

The Grand Staircase

The Cowichan Bay Maritime Center unveiled it’s new expansion project under damp skies today, the event taking place in conjunction with Cittaslow Sunday.
Visitors from around the Cowichan Valley and beyond attended the pancake breakfast prior to opening ceremonies held at 1pm.
The expansion is a two story, 2000 square foot timber framed addition to the Maritime Center which features a members meeting room and lounge, kitchen and fireplace areas, renovated fully accessible public wash rooms and which will house new exhibits in a climate controlled environment.

Float Homes Under Threat

It was bound to happen, and now it finally has. At the CVRD’s February 21st Electoral Area Service Committee a motion was passed directing staff to initiate a process to amend the Area D Cowichan Bay Official Settlement Plan Bylaw No. 925 and Area D Zoning Bylaw No. 1015 to regulate float homes in Cowichan Bay Village.
Lori Iannidinardo must be beside herself with glee. She’s finally been given the green light to extend her influence over those who were previously beyond her reach.
