Sea Lions Are Typical Tourists.

The Sea Lions have arrived! We can see them, we can hear them, and before too much longer, we’ll be able to smell them too.

Every year they come to dine on the salmon that return to the Cowichan River to spawn. They are also elusive at times. Today when I went over to their camping spot to take a picture, they were all out fishing.

“Our” Sea Lions are just like the two legged tourists we get in the Bay from time to time.

They arrive a few at a time in the beginning of their season, then in huge groups.
They simply love the local cuisine.
They come for the seafood, most of which comes in to the bay from afar.
They love the local accommodation.
They get on the docks. (The breakwater actually.)
They firmly believe the docks were laid out specifically in honor of their visit.
They enjoy the local climate and sunshine.
They make a lot of noise.
Some local folk find them annoying.
Some local folk would like to see them shot. (In favour of “saving the salmon”.)
Most local folk take note that they have arrived, but largely ignore them after they have been here a while.
They leave almost as suddenly as they arrived, promising to return the following year.
