Lori Iannidinardo Makes Positive Statement in Press

From where I'm sitting, this is positive news.

From where I’m sitting, this is positive news.

In a letter which appeared in Sunday’s Cowichan News Leader Pictorial, Area Director Lori Iannidinardo made a statement clarifying her position on zoning issues related to the floating community in Cowichan Bay Village.

Ms Iannidinardo makes the following comments, amongst others in her letter;

“The waters of Cowichan Bay are important to all of us. These waters are experiencing impacts from a variety of sources, including upland and road runoff.

This was not explained in previous articles written about Cowichan Bay and floathomes. Impacts on the bay’s environment are not just coming from one source.

Sewage from floathomes and liveaboards is just one factor that has been heavily emphasized in the media.

There are many living on the water who manage their waste responsibly and many more who want to connect to sewer.

We are in a process of moving from a very old bylaw that doesn’t allow floathomes at all, to developing new bylaws that will accommodate our float home community in a way that fits with current health and safety regulations.

The current draft zoning bylaw is just a starting point. I’m working with staff to find positive ways to help take the community through the transition.”

This is the most positive statement yet from our Area Director regarding the issues we face.

It should be remembered however, that the issues surrounding float homes in Cowichan Bay are far from settled. The letter closes with this comment by the editorial staff;

“Lori Iannidinardo is the Cowichan Valley Regional District director, for Cowichan Bay (Area D). The regional district is pursuing bylaw revisions that would legalize currently illegal floathomes, but only under conditions some feel will force them to move.”
